The Uninterruptible Power Supply
|
|
Computers that hold important data are sometimes equipped with an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The UPS is basically a box with
a big battery in and it is inserted between the power outlet and the
PC's power plug.

In case of brown outs or short power sags these power supplies act as a
buffer to prevent the computer from rebooting. If the power fails for
more than 1-2 seconds UPS's can give some 15 minutes power from their
battery. It is not intended to go on working for that time, but rather to
allow the attached computer(s) to shut down smoothly without loosing
data. Hence the UPS sends a shutdown request to all attached machines
as soon as the power is down.

Uninterruptible power supplies cost rather much; they are installed only
if it is really important. The smallest supply one computer only, but
there are UPS's that are responsible for hundreds of machines at once.
